Why should I pay for AI hype? lane keeping assistance
I have a quite recent car, made in 2022, and equipped with most of the mandatory ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) required by the European law. This factsheet summarized what is mandatory since 2024: Fact Sheet General Safety regulations July 2024
Quite a long list
- Intelligent speed assistance
- Reversing detection with
camera or sensors - Attention warning in case of
driver drowsiness - Emergency stop signal
- Cybersecurity measures
- Lane keeping assistance
- Advanced emergency braking
detecting cars, pedestrians
and bicycles - Event data recorders
Probably I payed quite a lot of money for them, unfortunately I am not really satisfied, at least of the lane keeping assistance.
Few days ago I was driving on a country road, and on the ground there was a big chunk of wood… a storm finished some hours before. It has been really unpleasant to notice that the steering wheel became hard because the car wanted to stay in the lane, and collide with the obstacle!
I cannot disable that system permanently, I have to disable it each time I start a new journey. I spend most of the time on country roads, as I bough a small car that I use only for home/work/school trips. So finally I have been forced to buy something expensive that is not reliable enough, or at least not in the kind of trips I do.
AI can do great things, but it should not become mandatory just for hype, it should prove to be reliable!
